Weslaco police said a 29-year-old man led them on a high-speed chase with his children in the car Tuesday night.

Lee Roy Guerra drove at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour with his two children after an officer conducted a traffic stop. Police said the car matched the description of a vehicle involved in a theft.

Guerra is charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, endangering a child and resisting arrest.

According to police, he fled when the officer approached on foot during the traffic stop.

Eventually, the chase came to an end near West Mile 4 1/2 and North Mile 5. Police said the suspect bailed out of the car and ran into a wooded area, forcing a foot chase.

Officers discovered the two children, who were strapped in child safety seats that weren't secured to the car, the release said.

Guerra's bond was set at a total of $20,000 on Wednesday and he was transported to the Hidalgo County jail.
