MOUNTAIN VIEW, Colo. -- A police officer and a suspect were both shot during the process of an arrest inside a northwest Denver sports bar Sunday night.
According to Wheat Ridge police spokesperson Jim Lorentz, the incident occurred just after 9 p.m. at Jugz Sports Tavern on West 44th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard near the town of Mountain View.
Police say they received a tip about a stolen car from Thornton in the sports bar’s parking lot. When they arrived, they found 27-year-old Marcus Ray Martinez, a man with a warrant out for his arrest, was the one who had driven the car to the bar.
When a pair of officers — one from Mountain View and one from Lakeside — arrived on scene and tried to arrest Martinez, he resisted, drew a handgun and fired, striking the Mountain View officer in the leg.
Police returned fire, striking Martinez and the struggle ended. Both men were transported to a nearby hospital. The suspect is in serious condition, while the officer, whose name is not being released, was treated for injuries. He is expected to be released Monday.
Martinez was wanted for failing to pay car insurance and not showing up for his court date.
