STOCKTON, Calif. -- A Stockton police officer and the suspect he was trying to arrest were struck by a minivan shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday.
The suspect, identified by police as 35-year-old Jessie Coley, fled on a bicycle when an officer approached him at Fremont Square on East Lindsay Street, authorities said.
The officer pursued Coley in his patrol car until Coley got off his bike and tried to flee on foot at the corner of North San Joaquin Street and East Miner Avenue, police said.
The officer tackled the man in the middle of Miner Avenue, and the two began fighting, Lt. Michael Reynosa said.
A woman driving a Pontiac Montana hit Coley and the officer, leaving the officer with minor injuries and Coley with minor to moderate injuries, Reynosa said. Both were taken to a hospital.
Coley, a parolee at large, was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and violating his parole, Reynosa said.
The woman driving the minivan didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and likely won't be arrested, Reynosa said.
The officer's name was not immediately released pending notification of his family.
