Bulletproof Vest Saves Detroit Officer in Shootout

The officer was shot in the back Wednesday afternoon on the city's east side.

A Detroit police officer shot in the back Wednesday afternoon on the city's east side was protected from the bullet by his vest and was expected be released from the hospital.

"He didn't sustain any serious injuries," Detroit police spokesman Officer Phillip Cook said. "He took the round in his vest."

The officer was taken to the hospital after being shot at East Grand Boulevard and Mack around 2:30 p.m.

Prior to the incident, police had gone to the 9300 block of Jefferson to execute an arrest warrant for a 22-year-old man wanted for assault with intent to commit murder, police said.

The man jumped into a vehicle, rammed a police car and then bailed from his car and ran into a funeral home, authorities said.

"He exited the funeral home firing shots, which is when the officer was struck in the back," Cook said. "The other officers returned fire."

The suspect was hit twice -- in the leg and chest -- and taken to the hospital, where he was listed in temporarily serious condition, police said.

People have not released the name of the officer hit or the name of the man accused of firing the shot.
