Police said the would-be carjacker ran and the others escaped in the SUV.

An off-duty Detroit police officer shot a would-be carjacker Monday, police said Tuesday.

According to police, the officer -- a 41-year-old who has worked for the department for 13 years -- was exiting his car at about 11:50 p.m. Monday in the 15400 block of St. Marys when an SUV drove up and blocked his way.

Police said the SUV was occupied by three people. When an armed man got out of the SUV and demanded the officer's keys, the officer produced his gun and shot at the suspect.

Police said the would-be carjacker ran and the others escaped in the SUV. At about 12:30 a.m. officers discovered a 19-year-old man, who matched the description of the attempted carjacker, in a local hospital being treated for a gunshot would. The man is in critical condition and in police custody, police said.
