A Henry County police officer died Monday night after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while assisting a stranded motorist.
Officer Elgin L. Daniel, 53, stopped to help a motorist who ran out of gas on North Henry Boulevard in Stockbridge around 6:40 p.m. when he and a roadside assistance worker who also stopped were struck by a truck, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Henry County Police Department spokesman Sgt. Joey Smith told the newspaper that the vehicle continued eastbound on State Route 138 toward Rockdale County.
The vehicle is believed to be a between 1997 and 2008 model-year Ford F-250 pickup truck.
A sheriff's deputy spotted the two victims on the road and called 911.
Both Daniel and the roadside assistance worker were transported by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries.
Daniel was taken to surgery, but did not survive.
He had served with the Henry County Police Department for two years after retiring from the DeKalb County Police Department following 26 years on the job.
The injuries sustained by the worker were not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators remained on the scene for several hours Monday night.
