Voters: West Virginia Sheriffs Must Go After Two Terms

Nov. 7, 2012
The West Virginia Sheriff's Association says limiting a good sheriff to two terms creates upheaval on many fronts.

Nov. 07--MADISON -- For the fourth straight time West Virginia voters rejected lifting term limits on the office of county sheriff.

In Boone County, those for the amendment cast 3,998 votes versus 3,799 against it, but the measure failed statewide by a margin of 53 to 47 percent.

The West Virginia Sheriff's Association advocated the amendment. They maintain limiting a good sheriff to two terms is unfortunate because often the change creates upheaval in law enforcement and tax collection policies. The organization maintains it's the only office in each county bound by term limits and even a bad prosecutor, clerk, or county commissioner can put their name back on the ballot after four years.

Boone County voters overwhelmingly passed the Emergency Ambulance Service Levy with 73.72 percent for it and 26.28 percent against it. County voters also passed the Fire Protection Services and Equipment Levy with 74.01 percent for it and 2,123 against it.

The Public Libraries Levy in Boone County passed 72.53 percent for it and 2,221 against it, and the Senior Citizens' Nutrition Program Levy easily passed with 7,140 voting for it and on 1,172 voting against it.
