Nov. 03--WILLIAMSBURG-- A bizarre incident that put a suspect in the hospital was certified to a grand jury and will likely go to trial.
Percy George Hardy, 40, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday in General District Court. He was arrested in September after he allegedly attempted to break into a James City County home. Afterward police connected him to three other crimes. He's charged with attempted breaking and entering, breaking and entering, petit larceny and two counts of grand larceny.
A ring of the doorbell at a house in the 100 block of Cooley Road began the series of events. According to police, Hardy tried to open the door when no one answered. Finding it locked, he reportedly tried a back sliding door that was barred. The occupant saw him and screamed, so Hardy ran off.
Officers found Hardy riding a bicycle down John Tyler Highway and took him into custody. While in the police cruiser, he manuevered his hands in front of him and tried to swallow several rings. An officer was able to retrieve one of the rings from Hardy's mouth.
Investigation revealed that the bike, the retrieved ring and a mini-backpack purse Hardy was carrying were all stolen. He was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for X-rays, but later regurgitated the remaining rings.
