Oct. 12--LONGMONT -- A Longmont man was sentenced to six years in prison in Boulder District Court on Friday for threats he made against a Longmont police officer who investigated arson cases against him and the prosecutor who filed the charges.

Conrad Nilsson was arrested in July 2011 on suspicion of setting a series of three arson fires in Longmont last summer. No one was hurt in the fires at a storage facility at 433 Mountain View Ave. or at two spaces in a mobile home park at 525 15th Ave. He was charged in the case.

However, last winter, according to police and court records, he sent anonymous emails to Longmont Police Detective Greg Malsam demanding an apology to "you know who" and made a reference to Malsam's ex-wife. In a second email, the sender referred to Malsam's ex-wife's daughter and said that her background information had been sent to 13 registered sex offenders who lived within a mile of her home.

Prosecutor Michael Foote also received an email that noted his address and said that his daughter's background information had been sent to sex offenders near his home.

Cyber crime detectives traced the emails to Nilsson. The Boulder County District Attorney's Office arranged for a special prosecutor from Adams County to prosecute the arson case and he filed additional charges based on the threats. In June Nilsson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief in the arson cases and to felony victim or witness retaliation in the threats case.

Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur said the case is important because the sentence should discourage others who may resort to threatening the police and prosecutors investigating crimes.

"We want them to be safe doing their jobs," he said. "We are satisfied with the sentence."
