Sept. 10--Coastal Carolina University's head cheerleading coach was arrested Sunday after she refused to get out of her boyfriend's pickup truck bed and then fought with police officers who tried to arrest her, according to authorities.
Elizabeth Hadley Appenzeller, 31, of Conway was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 3:20 p.m. Sunday on charges of resisting arrest and public disorderly/public intoxication, according to jail records. Officers on Monday filed assault on a police officer and first-offense criminal domestic violence charges.
Her bond was set at $12,950, according to jail records updated at 12 p.m. Monday.
Appenzeller is an employee of CCU, but the school has no comment about her arrest, said Mona Prufer, a spokeswoman.
A Conway police report showed that officers were called at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to a home at 1509 Odiham Place after a woman refused to get out of the bed of a man's pickup truck. When officers arrived they found Appenzeller sitting in the bed of the truck and a 29-year-old man inside the truck.
The man said he had been in a relationship with Appenzeller and went to the home to get his belongings when she refused to get out of the truck so he could leave, according to the report. Appenzeller told police she was upset the relationship was ending and that he did not stay the previous night with her.
Officers asked Appenzeller to get out of the truck, which she did, but she became "loud and boisterous and used profanity while standing in the road way," according to the report. Officers asked her to be quieter and not use profanity because the location is near Sandridge Recreation field where a baseball or softball team was practicing.
When officers went to arrest Appenzeller, she resisted until an officer "lifted her off of her feet and tilted her sideways in order to displace her weight and balance," according to the report. Appenzeller continued to scream, begged police not to arrest her and kicked officers until she was handcuffed.
Appenzeller suffered minor cuts to her knee and elbow.
While police photographed and fingerprinted Appenzeller, the officer wrote in the report that she admitted to hitting her boyfriend in the face before officers arrived.
According to CCU's website Appenzeller has been the head cheerleading coach since 2009 and is responsible for the school's mascot, Chauncey.
Before joining CCU, Appenzeller was the assistant coach at Wingate University from 2008 to 2009, and the head cheerleading coach and spirit liaison at Greensboro College from 2006 to 2008, according to the site.
