Sept. 08--LILLINGTON -- A Harnett County deputy was injured Thursday when his patrol car hydroplaned on N.C. 27 during heavy rains and crashed into a tree, the Highway Patrol said.
Deputy Derek Sharp, 23, was responding as a backup to another deputy on a disturbance call around 6:45 p.m., the patrol said.
The wreck was between Talon Drive and Buie Road in the Barbecue community, according to a report filed by Trooper J.E. Stahl.
According to the report, 3 to 4 inches of water had pooled on the road, Sheriff Larry Rollins said.
Highway Patrol Sgt. John Bobbitt said Sharp hydroplaned off the left side of N.C. 27. The Ford Crown Victoria slid into a tree, hitting the passenger's side, Bobbitt said.
Sharp, who has been with the Sheriff's Office for six months, was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, Rollins said Friday morning.
"They're going to keep him one more night," Rollins said. "He's a very blessed young man."
It's not known whether charges will be filed, Bobbitt said.
The patrol car was a total loss, Rollins said.
