Aug. 28--CUMBERLAND -- A Frederick man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in a city parking lot at South Mechanic and Harrison streets when he attempted to break into a marked sheriff's office cruiser and then scuffled with a Maryland state trooper who intervened in the incident.

The accused, who was not identified, and the trooper reportedly sustained pepper spray contamination and were taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment following the incident that occurred at about 2:45 p.m. after a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance responded to the scene.

The trooper was apparently returning to the parking lot from the nearby district court building when he discovered the crime in progress and was then allegedly assaulted by the suspect, who resisted arrest.

Numerous city and state police units responded to the scene before the handcuffed, shirtless man was taken to the hospital for treatment prior to being charged with numerous offenses that were expected to include assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.

The matter was being handled by Maryland State Police, according to a Cumberland Police spokesman.

The parking lot where the incident occurred is commonly used by local police officers during appearances in district court. The location is at the corner of a busy downtown intersection flanked by Interstate 68 ramps.
