Maine Cop Spots Missing Girl During Theft Investigation

Aug. 28, 2012
A Gorham detective remembered a photo of a missing girl while investigating a theft and found a runaway in the process.

Aug. 28--GORHAM -- Detective Brian Key had just returned from vacation to find an overflowing inbox of emails.

One of them was a statewide bulletin -- sent a week or so ago -- to be on the lookout for a 15-year-old Palmyra girl who had run away from home.

So Harley McGinnis' picture was fresh in his mind when Key and Sgt. Dana Anderson went to a house on Huston Road at 4:15 p.m. Monday to investigate a theft complaint. Key spotted McGinnis in the apartment, and when confronted, she identified herself, Anderson said Tuesday.

The girl had been staying with the family but apparently had misled them about her name and age, Anderson said. He did not know how she came to interact with the family.

Key returned with the girl to the station and her family came to get her.

McGinnis had been reported missing by her grandparents, who are also her guardians, on Aug. 16. They say she had threatened to run away.

Police say McGinnis was in good health and there was no indication she was being held against her will.
