Virginia Officer Injured in Fatal Head-on Crash

The injured Fairfax County, Va. officer managed to call in the wreck that claimed the life of the other motorist.

ROSE HILL, Va. (WUSA) -- A fatal accident involving a Fairfax County Police vehicle has Franconia Road closed between S. Van Dorn Street and Rose Hill Drive on Monday morning. Police may soon open Franconia Road one lane in both directions.

Police said the accident was reported shortly before 3 a.m., at Franconia Road (Rt. 644), and Gum Street. A police official says that the officer was traveling eastbound on Franconia near Gum Street when a 2006 Infiniti, which was traveling westbound, swerved to the left and hit the cruiser head-on, bursting into flames.

The driver (and only occupant) of the Infiniti was killed. Police say the driver was an adult male.

The police officer was able to call for help. He was transported to a hospital with what police said are non-life threatening injuries. The officer is described as 30 years old and a 7-year veteran of the force.

Motorist are advised to avoid that area while police investigate the crash.
