While conducting a perimeter check of the Middlesex (Mass.) House of Correction, an officer was killed in a single-car crash in Billerica on Wednesday morning.

According to local television station Fox 25 News, Middlesex County Corrections Officer Edward “Teddy” Dillion III of Lowell, Mass., died when the cruiser he was operating left the road and sustained heavy front end damage in the crash that occurred at about 4:30 a.m.

Dillion, who was 27, routinely conducted routine perimeter checks of the facility and nearby Middlesex Sheriff’s Office property on the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. According to Officer Down Memorial Page, he was performing one of those checks when the accident happened.

In a statement Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian said his thoughts and prayers “as well as those of the entire Middlesex Sheriff's Office, go out to Officer Dillon's family, friends and colleagues. We know the work of correction officers is difficult and dangerous, but that does nothing to ease the pain and shock when we lose one of our own.”

Koutoujian continued to say the “Middlesex Sheriff's Office will work to ensure that our officers and the Dillon family have the support they need as we grieve Teddy's passing."

The fallen officer had been with the sheriff’s office since 2008.

The cause of the accident has not been determined and it is under investigation, according to the Sheriff’s office.
