July 11--Police recaptured a 45-year-old man who escaped last month from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center, but only after a struggle in which an officer was injured.

The escapee, Carleton James Santos, is charged with second-degree escape, unauthorized entry into a dwelling, resisting arrest, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and unlawful imprisonment.

Santos, who was only a few months away from a parole hearing, escaped from Oahu Community Correctional Center's work furlough program on June 25.

Police found him at about 10:15 a.m. Monday at an Ahiahi Place address off North School Street in Kalihi. When officers arrived, Santos fled and broke into a housing unit occupied by a 47-year-old man and held him against his will, police said.

Santos assaulted an officer while attempting to flee from the unit, police said.

The officer was treated at a hospital and released with noncritical injuries, police said.

Santos was convicted for robbery and began serving a 20-year sentence in 2000.

Santos was paroled in December 2004, but he violated his parole and was brought back to prison in April 2005 because he tested positive for drugs, didn't check in with his parole officer and didn't get the required drug treatment, according to the Department of Public Safety.

His next parole hearing was scheduled for November.
