OWENSBURG, Ind. -- Two sheriff’s deputies were shot and one man was killed during a domestic standoff at a home in far southeast Greene County on Wednesday morning.
About 9:45 a.m., two Greene County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home in the 6500 block of State Road 45, near Owensburg, on reports of a domestic dispute. When the deputies arrived, the woman who made the call had already left the scene.
Officials said a man suspected to have been involved in the incident remained inside the home.
"Once officers arrived at the residence, shots were fired," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil. "Officers returned fire. One deputy was originally struck in the leg. A second deputy was hit in the neck and shoulder area."
The deputies were identified as Jim O'Malley and Brad Deckard.
The gunfire exchange continued for a period of five to 10 minutes, police said, after which Michael Lane Jr., 25, was found dead.
The deputies' injuries were not believed to life-threatening. Both were taken to Bloomington Hospital.
Authorities did not release additional information about the woman or details on a possible motive.
