Police in Waco, Texas say Michael Daniel remained jailed after a judge revoked his bail in a previous assault case. The 22-year-old is charged with "felony cruelty to a non-livestock animal".

A caller reported a man was going crazy, and when officers arrived, they found Daniel on the porch covered in blood and holding the dead dog, police said.

The dog, a medium-sized Spaniel mix, belonged to one of the people he shared a house with.

Daniel reportedly told people at the home he had taken K-2, a form of synthetic marijuana, then assaulted them and started biting the dog's flesh. It took him some time to snap out of a stupor, but then he asked officers to "Tase him or fight him to snap him out of the "bad trip".

According to the Drugs Enforcement Agency, K-2, also known as 'spice,' is a mixture of herbs and spices sprayed with a compound similar to THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana.

The attack is the latest so called "zombie assault" in the US. It followed the case of Rudy Eugene, 31, who was shot dead by police when he was found eating the face of a homeless man in Miami, Florida after allegedly taking the legal high Cloud Nine.
