Georgia Deputy Killed in Crash With Wrong-Way Driver

A Byran County, Ga., Sheriff’s Office Deputy was killed in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in Chatham County.

According Officer Down Memorial Page, Deputy Sheriff Robert "Bobby" Crapse Sr. was killed in his cruiser during the crash which occurred near mile marker 97 at about 2:15 a.m. Friday.

Deputy Crapse had just completed a traffic control assignment and was driving back to the north part of Bryan County when the crash occurred, according to ODMP. The officer’s canine partner sustained very minor injuries.

According to a news account broadcasted on local television station WJCL ABC28, Deputy Crapse was hit by a Toyota driven by a 23-year-old woman from Richmond Hill who had been reported going the wrong way on the interstate just minutes before. The television station reported that the out-of-district officer couldn’t hear it on his radio.

The station also reported that he was being followed by a colleague who had just been on the same detail and the second officer pulled the fatally injured deputy from the cruiser just before it caught fire. The deputy was flown to Memorial Union Medical Center where he died.

Deputy Crapse is survived by his wife and three children.
