PITTSFIELD -- A city police officer and another driver were treated for minor injuries on Tuesday after a multi-car crash that left two vehicles -- including a police cruiser -- severely damaged. The police officer, who has not been identified, was heading eastbound on Orchard Street shortly after 1 p.m. when the cruiser struck two parked vehicles before hitting the rear of a Honda Ridgeline pickup truck that was attempting to make a left turn onto Second Street.

The cruiser continued east, driving through a gate before coming to a rest on the lawn of the Juvenile Resource Center of the Berkshire County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Ridgeline and the officer were taken to Berkshire Medical Center; the officer was held overnight for observation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police did not release the names of the individuals involved. Investigators said the crash was not the result of police action, and the officer involved is not suspected of any wrongdoing.

The police cruiser sustained major damage to its front end, while the Ridgeline had significant damage to its rear. The city is expected to be held at fault for the accident, according to police. The department declined to comment further.
