Wounded N.H. Officer Says He's Taking it 'Day By Day'

April 30--MANCHESTER -- The community continued to rally around Manchester Police Officer Daniel Doherty Sunday, hosting a fundraiser and party at the Black Brimmer on Elm Street.

"The support has been overwhelming," Doherty said.

The officer was shot multiple times March 21 on the city's West Side. The accused shooter, Myles Webster, is charged with attempted murder.

Doherty, who was released from Catholic Medical Center April 13, arrived in a wheelchair. He was escorted into the building as the New Hampshire Police Association Pipe and Drum Band played.

Doherty said he plans to get back to work as soon as he can; he will be "100 percent" when he hits the streets again, he said.

"It's a slow process, I'm taking it day by day," Doherty said.

Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas was among the hundreds on hand Sunday.

"I think when somebody has gone through what Dan Doherty has, it's wonderful to show support," Gatsas said.

He added: "People know first responders are an integral part of this community. When they can step up and help them out, they do,"

All the proceeds from the party went to the Daniel Doherty Fund set up by the Manchester Police Association.

"He's out on worker's comp, not full salary," Manchester Detective Stacy Howe said of Doherty, who is also missing out on extra details and overtime pay as he recovers from his injuries.

Sunday's benefit party was put together, in part, by Ralph and Deb Guevarez, who have friends in common with Doherty.

"I thought it would be a good thing to do," Ralph Guevarez said.

Guevarez organized the bands that played at the benefit, including Stomping Melvin, Coverslip, Friday After Five, and My Sister Will. He also arranged for a raffle of items, including a guitar autographed by members of Godsmack, and a Tedy Bruschi autographed jersey.
