Fatal Car Blast Hospitalizes Calif. Border Agent

The agent was standing next to the car he pulled over when it exploded.

BUCKMAN SPRINGS, Calif. -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating a car explosion that killed one and sent a Border Patrol agent to the hospital.

The agent was pursuing a vehicle in East County just after midnight. The driver finally pulled over near Olde Highway 80 and Buckman Springs Road just east of Sunrise Highway.

The agent was standing next to the car when it exploded. The driver of the car died at the scene.

The agent was airlifted to a local hospital with second degree burns to his face.

The Sheriff?s bomb and arson team are on scene. They are checking the vehicle for explosives before transporting the car.

The Border Patrol has not released the name of the agent involved or the reason for the pursuit.
