Florida Deputy Killed During Traffic Stop

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A deputy was shot and killed Tuesday during a traffic stop near here.

Two suspects were later apprehended by officers after a chase and crash.

Deputy Barbara Pill, 52, was shot multiple times after she pulled over a car whose occupants were suspected in a theft at a local motel, Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker told reporters at a news conference.

"Our worst nightmare has come true," Parker said. "She is a tremendous loss to our community."

Parker said that a call came in reporting that two people were stealing items from the hotel.

After the shooting, local and state troopers chased the suspects' vehicle. It eventually crashed, and a man and a woman were taken into custody, police told reporters,.
