RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Rapid City police officer is credited with rescuing a dog from a frozen drain field with the help of an extension cord.

Authorities said Officer Kyle Theisen tied one end of the cord around his waist and anchored the other end to a fence and broke a path of thin ice to the yellow Labrador retriever.

The officer had responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning in Rapid City. The dog was struggling in the icy water. Theisen brought the dog to an animal shelter for emergency care. Police said the yellow lab is doing well.

Police Lt. Peter Ragnone said that Theisen "has a big heart and the courage to match it."
