N.Y. Officer Shot by Own Gun During Struggle

A Nassau County police officer was shot by his own weapon during a struggle with a suspect early Friday morning, according to WABC-TV.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. in a parking lot at the East Meadow Shopping Plaza.

The unidentified officer was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

Officials said the two men were fighting over the gun when it fired once, striking the officer in the left femur.

The suspect was shot twice by the officer's partner who chased him down and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told the news station that it is unclear if the confrontation stemmed from a traffic stop or if the officers approached the suspect's vehicle in the parking lot.
