Maryland Officer Injured in Crash With Tractor-Trailer

Dec. 29, 2011
The officer, who was the only person in the patrol car, was being treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

A Baltimore County police officer and two other people suffered injuries Wednesday after the officer's cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer on the Baltimore Beltway in Towson, forcing police to temporarily close the highway.

Detective Cathy Batton said the officer, who was the only person in the patrol car, was being treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and two women who were in a Jeep were taken to Sinai Hospital. None of the patients has life-threatening injuries, said Batton, a police spokeswoman. Two people in the tractor-trailer were not hurt.

The accident took place shortly before noon near the Providence Road exit, forcing police to shut down the inner loop of the highway at that exit minutes later. The Beltway was reopened about 2:30 p.m.

In a news release, Batton said a preliminary investigation showed that the officer was merging onto Interstate 695 from Providence Road when his vehicle was struck by the tractor-trailer. The officer's car crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the concrete dividing wall. Batton did not describe how the Jeep was involved in the accident.

The officer was flown by a state police medevac helicopter to Shock Trauma.
