The officer -- who has been with the department for 18 months -- was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery that ended around 3:30 a.m.

His wounds were described as life-threatening.

Police arrested 19-year-old Kyle Williams just after 8 a.m. the following morning and have a warrant charging him with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm.
