PACIFIC BEACH, Calif. --
Two San Diego Police officers were taken to the hospital after suffering minor injuries responding to a noise complaint in Pacific Beach.
Police received a call about loud music coming from an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Ingraham Street near La Playa around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night.
When officers knocked on the door of the second floor apartment things quickly turned violent.
"When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they were greeted by a combative individual. He threw a small dog at them as a distraction, and then immediately attacked one of our officers," said SDPD Lt. Brian Goldberg.
A female officer suffered a mild concussion and a male officer suffered a nose injury. Police said the suspect, 30-year-old Tyler Torres, then locked his apartment door and went out onto his balcony where he continued to make threats.
"The suspect said numerous times if you want to take me, you're going to have to take me the hard way and if you enter into my apartment, you're going to meet my 9, which referred to a 9 mm handgun," said Goldberg.
SWAT units and crisis negotiators were called in, but Torres, who appeared drunk, refused to surrender. According to police, at one point Torres taunted them by wearing one of the injured officer’s hats.
Ultimately, police fired off several pepper balls and then stormed into the apartment. Torres was taken away in handcuffs just before 12:30 a.m. It is unclear if officers found any weapons inside, but at one point they said Torres flashed a knife.
Torres' dog could be heard crying during the whole ordeal, but officers removed the animal from the apartment uninjured.
Torres is in jail facing charges that include assault likely to produce great bodily injury and resisting arrest with violence.
People who live in the adjacent apartments had to evacuate until the standoff was over.
He was being held on $100,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
