Montana Deputy Killed Directing Traffic

Blaine County Undersheriff Pat Pyette was fatally struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a disabled vehicle on Wednesday night.

A Blaine County deputy was fatally struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a disabled vehicle Wednesday night, according to The Havre Daily News.

Undersheriff Pat Pyette, 54, was outside of his vehicle when 61-year-old Mary Steward hit him around 5 p.m.on U. S. Highway 2, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

He was flown to Benefis Hospital in Great Falls where he died.

"He was a fine man, willing to do anything for anybody, no matter who or what," Sheriff Glenn Huestis told the newspaper. "He was dedicated to our community and the people he served."

Pyette had worked with the Blaine County Sheriff's Office for 10 years after he retired from the U. S. Air Force.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
