Car Burglary Suspect Wounded by Fla. Deputy
Nov. 20--A 20-year-old car burglary suspect was shot Sunday morning by a Broward Sheriff's deputy following a scuffle.
The suspect, Joe Toney of Lauderdale Lakes, was taken to Broward General Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, said BSO spokesman Jim Leljedal.
The incident began around 8:40 a.m. when the suspect allegedly tried to steal a purse from a car at the BP gas station at the corner of Oakland Park Boulevard and State Road 7.
The suspect grabbed the woman's bag and ran. A be-on-the-look-out alert was issued by BSO. A deputy spotted the suspect outside Laporkin Shipping on the 3800 block of Northwest 29 Street and approached him.
Police said the two men scuffled. The deputy opened fire. It's unclear how many shots were fired or where the suspect was wounded.
Toney was already wanted for violating his probation.
The deputy's name is not released.
