N.J. Officer Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver

A Mount Arlington police officer died early Sunday morning in a motor vehicle crash caused by a driver under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, reports the Star-Ledger newspaper.

Officer Joseph Wargo, 38, was driving east on I-80 during his routine patrol when an intoxicated driver who was heading west crossed the median and struck Wargo's marked police vehicle.

Wargo's vehicle sustained extensive damage and was pushed off I-80 and into the woods, the paper  reports. He was flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m.

Wargo had served the Mount Arlington Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his wife.
