Guns, Weapons, Explosives Seized Near Border in Texas

FRONTON, Texas --

United States Border Patrol agents seized several high-powered weapons, ammunition and explosives near the Rio Grande Tuesday.

A Border Patrol news release stated the weapons were discovered when agents patrolling near the river found a black bag hidden in the brush.

According to the release, agents found six assault rifles, a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, 20 ammunition magazines of various calibers, a lower receiver for an assault rifle, and three packages of what appears to be C-4 all inside the bag.

"These deadly weapons could have had a devastating impact on communities on both sides of the border and to our agents or other law enforcement officers," said Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa in the news release. "The vigilance of these agents potentially saved lives that would have been lost had these weapons ended up in the hands of violent criminals. Criminal activity in the Rio Grande Valley will not be tolerated and we will continue to disrupt the efforts of smuggling organizations."

The release stated the seized items will be turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for further investigation.
