Sept. 13--A 3-year-old girl was injured a fire on the city's east side this morning, an official said.

At about 10:30 a.m., the fire was reported on Cooper, near Lernoult, Detroit Police Deputy Chief James Tolbert said. He said police were the first on scene and at least two officers attempted to enter the burning home.

"They did get in," be said, "but the flames kind of drove them out."

He said that then the Detroit Fire Department arrived and about six firefighters went in, knocked the fire down and rescued the girl.

"They did a great job," Tolbert said.

He said the girl was taken to Children's Hospital of Michigan, where he heard she is being moved into the intensive care unit.

A fire official said the girl is being treated for smoke inhalation and said the fire is under investigation.

On their way to the fire, officers driving in a police scout car were in an accident at Shoemaker and Mountclair, but no one was injured in the crash, Tolbert said. He said the scout car's lights and sirens were on when it came in contact with a van, causing the police care to careen off of the road and into a garage.

He said the crash is still under investigation.
