ATLANTA --

A person who was walking on an interstate near downtown Atlanta was struck by an Atlanta police officer.

Police said the officer, who was on DUI patrol, was headed north on the downtown connector near Interstate 20 at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police said the person ran onto the road in front of the officer’s patrol car.

Investigators at the scene told a Channel 2 photographer that the officer tried to dodge the victim but was not able to.

“Unfortunately he struck him with the patrol vehicle on the left side,” said Capt. Van Hobbs

Doctors were treating the victim for severe leg fractures.

The officer was not hurt.
