Two accidents involving Broward public school buses sent two people to the hospital Monday, the first day of school.
The most serious happened in Coral Springs when a police officer assigned to the traffic enforcement unit hit the back of a bus with three students on board.
The officer, John Malvin, was driving his department-issued Harley-Davidson north on Coral Ridge Drive at 8:37 a.m. when he hit the back driver's side of the bus driven by Margaret Carter, 58.
Carter was trying to turn south on Coral Ridge Drive from Northwest 36th Street, police said.
Malvin, 52, was thrown from his motorcycle and landed on the east side of Coral Ridge Drive. He was flown to North Broward Medical Center with fractures to his shoulder, kneecap, finger and several ribs, according to a news release.
Malvin has been with the department for 18 years. He remained in the hospital late Monday after undergoing knee surgery and would likely remain there for a while, said Coral Springs police Lt. Joe McHugh.
No one on the bus was injured.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident, McHugh said.
In Davie, a student was taken to Broward General Medical Center to be checked out after a crash involving a Honda Pilot and a bus.
Davie Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Marshal Bob Taylor said the department was called to Davie Road and Southwest 39th Street just before 10 a.m.
The child, who attends Nova Middle School, was examined and released from the hospital by 11 a.m., said Broward school district spokeswoman Nadine Drew.
"We are reminding drivers to please be patient and mindful that school buses are back on the road and school zones are in effect, and to especially look out for our student pedestrians and bicyclists who are returning to school," Drew said in an email.
