LAKEWOOD, Wash. --

A Washington State Patrol trooper and another driver were injured in a high-speed collision in Lakewood early Saturday, a State Patrol spokesman said.

The collision happened around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Route 512 and South Tacoma Way just west of Interstate 5.

Washington State Patrol said a driver traveling at a high rate of speed ran a red light at the intersection and hit the patrol car.

After the crash, the patrol car made a 180 degree turn before stopping in the middle of the intersection. The front end of the cruiser was smashed in.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Neither driver was seriously injured in the crash, though both were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Investigators closed the intersection until around 5:45 a.m.

Officers will review footage from cameras at the intersection to aid in the investigation.
