BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. --

Three people were shot in a robbery Tuesday morning at a Broward County check-cashing store, police said.

The incident occurred at a store at 2927 W. Sunrise Blvd. in unincorporated central Broward County, near the Swap Shop.

Someone called 911 to report a robbery at the store just before 9:30 a.m.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said that when officers arrived, there was a shootout. Police said two people were wounded in the initial gunfire.

One of the two injured people was an armed suspect, who was lying outside of the store, police said. Paramedics who tried to help the man realized he was armed and called the SWAT team to remove him.

"The suspect on the ground had been wounded," said Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti. "The paramedics moved in to try to treat them. They saw they were armed. That suspect was armed on the ground. At that point, they retreated and waited for SWAT to come in."

A second person was found shot outside the store. It is unclear whether that person was a robber or a bystander.

It is unclear how many robbers were involved in the crime at the store.

A third gunshot victim was found inside the store. Police believe that person to be a store clerk who called police.

All three wounded people were taken to Broward General Medical Center for treatment.

Officers from BSO and the Fort Lauderdale and Sunrise police departments are investigating.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
