JACKSON, Miss. --

A shootout between a Jackson police officer and a man end with the suspect dead and the officer recovering in a hospital.

It happened around 11 p.m. Saturday while the officer was patrolling Delmont Street.

Police said the officer made a call saying there was a man with a gun, and just a few minutes later the officer called in saying he and the suspect had been shot.

Police believe the officer drove up while the suspect, 32-year-old Erwin Rand, was walking with a gun.

The officer was shot multiple times in his legs and Rand was shot in the waist.

Both the officer and Rand were taken to the University Medical Center. Rand died at the hospital. The name of the officer has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
