Rapid City Police Chief Steven Allender says the suspect died Wednesday afternoon at Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he was treated after being shot. Police have not publicly identified him.
Allender says police approached the suspect and three acquaintances after receiving complaints and determined that a minor alcohol violation had been committed. He says the suspect pulled a gun and fired on the officers and that at least one officer fired back, striking the suspect. The suspect's acquaintances are not suspected of wrongdoing.
Twenty-eight-year-old Officer James Ryan McCandless was killed and 27-year-old Officer Nick Armstrong was listed in critical condition. The third officer was in fair condition.
