Red Bank firefighters rescued a police officer who became trapped in an apartment fire Tuesday night, according to The Asbury Park Press.

Two police officers rushed into the Metropolitan Apartments shortly after 7 p.m. to search for residents before fire crews arrived on the scene.

They encountered thick smoke and one of the officer's was able to make it, but the other was trapped after a portion of the ceiling caved in on him.

Firefighters raised a ladder to the second-story window and the officer was able to escape.
