SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio police officer was placed on administrative leave late Saturday night after hitting and killing a toddler who had wandered into the street, officials said.

The accident happened after 9 p.m. in the 4100 block of Culebra Road.

Investigators said the 2-and-half-year-old boy was being watched by his father in a nearby apartment when the boy wondered off and out an unlocked door.

Police said the boy was then hit by a second car.

Both the officer and the driver of the other car stopped after the accident, police said.

No word on whether any charges will be filed.

Police were still investigating late Saturday night.
