ZIONSVILLE, Ind. --

A Zionsville police officer was critically injured in a single-car crash on Wednesday night.

Police said that at about 9:30 p.m., Officer Tom Henthorn, 28, was driving a cruiser on County Road 650 South.

The accident happened when Henthorn drove through the intersection of State Road 267 and struck a nearby barn, police said.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found Henthorn pinned inside the vehicle and unconscious.

Officials said it took crews nearly an hour to extricate Henthorn from the cruiser because of the severe impact of the crash.

Henthorn was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
