LAKE COMO, Fla. --

One police officer and two suspects were shot, one of which died, Thursday afternoon in Lake Como, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Another suspect was taken into custody after a pursuit.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators said a shootout occurred when an undercover fugitive task force was trying to arrest one man in what was described as a drug operation when shots were exchanged on Blueberry Hill Street.

Rescue personnel had requested multiple ambulances and a helicopter to the scene. The officer and at least one of the suspects were taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach by Putnam County Fire Rescue. The second suspect was shot

The third suspect was to be charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, deputies said.

The identity of the officer injured and his agency were not released, but he was a member of a task force that covers Putnam, Flagler and St. Johns counties, Local 6 News partner WJXT reported.

FDLE was investigating of the shootings. They said it's unclear who started the shootout. Investigators said they recovered two guns from the scene that belonged to the suspects.

"These undercovers just do an outstanding, heroic job," an FDLE spokesman said. "They have to put themselves in harm's way. They put themselves in the breech to catch these guys. The problem with that is, they also put themselves in a very critical danger zone."
