ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --

A man accidentally shot himself and died when he fired his gun at the St. Augustine Fraternal Order of Police gun range Wednesday morning, St. Johns County deputies said.

Rescuers were called to the gun range in the 5000 block of Inman Road, just north of state Road 16, before 11 a.m.

Police said the man was in the western shooting area of the gun range and had several firearms with him. Police said there were several other members in separate gun bays, and those members went over to the victim and found him on the ground with a gunshot wound.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released pending notification of his next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they do not believe the man who died was an officer.

There are about 900 members at the lodge and gun range, many of whom are auxiliary members. Those members are non-law enforcement, but they joined the gun range so they can be part of the law enforcement circle to have interaction with them.

Officers from the Fraternal Order of Police were pulling the victim's original application to see if he may have been a retired law enforcement officer from another county.
