DAYTON, Ohio --
A woman in a wheelchair was struck by a Dayton police cruiser late Tuesday afternoon while the officer was headed to another crash.
According to officials at the scene, the officer was on a non-emergency response to another accident without lights and sirens when he hit the woman on James H. McGee Blvd. near West Second Street at 4:30 p.m.
Investigators have not determined who is at fault, but police said all pedestrians need to obey traffic laws.
"Every pedestrian has the responsibility, unless they have a cross walk signal to cross, to yield to right of way traffic," Sgt. John Sullivan of the Dayton Police Department said. "You just can't standout in the middle of the road."
Police said the 50-year-old victim was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The airbag in the cruiser deployed, and the officer suffered minor injuries. He refused to be taken to the hospital.
Detectives will interview the woman and officer. Both should feel thankful the crash did not have a different outcome, police said.
"Anytime a person gets hit by a car, it's lucky when there's not serious injuries," Sullivan said.
