BAL HARBOUR, Fla. --
The Bal Harbour Police Department has given its officers a new weapon when it comes to fighting crime, by having them wear a camera on their uniforms.
Officers are testing out the new cameras that they wear on their shoulders.
The cameras record everything from an officer's point of view.
They are standard definition and run up to 12 hours.
According to police, the cameras not only help prosecute cases, but also help protect officers against allegations of abuse or brutality.
"There's this version, that version, and the camera in the middle with the truth," officer Ramon Fernandez told Local 10's Ross Palombo.
The ACLU said it's a good idea for both officers and the public because the video record is dependable.
"I think it's something they ought to embrace. It'll help them, and it'll help the public as well," said ACLU Executive Dir. Howard Simon.
Bal Harbour is testing the cameras for the next 30 days. If they decide to buy them, they cost about $4,000 each. That's less than outfitting a single car with a dash cam.
So far, officers seem to like them.
"It's an angel on my shoulder," Fernandez said.
