OMAHA, Neb. --

An Omaha police officer was hit by a car on Interstate 80 while responding to a minor crash on Friday morning.

Following the incident, Douglas County Deputy Gerald Madsen reminded drivers to follow the Move-Over Law, which requires drivers to enter the far lane when they see emergency workers or law enforcement pulled over.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, drivers on U.S. Highways have killed 150 officers since 1999.

"It's a lot safer for us and it's a lot safer for the vehicle we're stopping as well," said Madsen.

Law enforcers said if it's unsafe to move over because of traffic or some type of obstruction, just slow down and keep your eyes on the road ahead.
