INDIANAPOLIS --

Mourners paid their respects Wednesday evening by adding to a growing memorial on the patrol car of fallen Indianapolis police Officer David Moore.

The car parked at North District headquarters was adorned with flowers, teddy bears and more trinkets, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

"I just wanted to show my respects. I think it's sad that this had to happen," said Katie Johnson, who visited the memorial. "I mean, the police are out here to help the people in the community, and this was just a tragedy."

People stood beside the patrol car, draped in black, and reflected on a life lost in the line of duty. Katrina Goode brought along her children because she said she believes they can learn a valuable lesson.

"I want them to understand the importance of what these guys do for us and what they sacrifice for us as well," Goode said. "They protect us. They protect and serve our neighborhoods, and when tragedy strikes, it's good to know that we're here to support them."

A police officer for more than six years, Moore was named the department's rookie of the year in 2005, and won the Medal of Valor in 2009.

His father, Spencer Moore, is a retired lieutenant, and his mother, Joanne Moore, is a sergeant. Visitors to the memorial said they hold the police family in high regard for serving and are sad Moore, 29, paid the ultimate price.

"He had a long life ahead, and it was just cut too short," Johnson said.

"It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to know that people who give so much lose so much in return," Goode said.
