SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. --

The Scotts Valley Police Department is the first law enforcement agency in California to add an electric motorcycle to its fleet.

The electric motorcycle was created by Zero Motorcycles, which is based in Santa Cruz.

The department will use the Zero DS motorcycle for special events and park patrols.

"(You can) approach people in say a stealthy mode, compared to an endurance motorcycle, which are a lot louder," said David Ball, of the Scotts Valley Police Department.

The Scotts Valley Police Department has had the Zero DS motorcycle for about two months.

The motorcycle has a range of up to 50 miles and can top out at 67 mph.
