BOSTON --

Two Massachusetts State Police troopers were apparently fired upon early Saturday morning, police said.

The officers were working a paid detail on Route 93 North by Route 60 in Medford, when a small four-door sedan passed by and an occupant appeared to fire a single round in their direction.

"A muzzle flash was seen and discharge heard," spokesman David Procopio said.

"It was a troubling and unusual incident," Procopio told the Boston Globe. "After the incident we flooded the area with patrols and issued an officer safety alert to all area police departments."

Neither of the troopers was struck. They were not able to stop the car because of traffic conditions, police said.

The troopers' names were not released.
